The 75 Hard Rules, Explained Properly
7 min read
75 Hard is not a fitness program. Its creator, Andy Frisella, calls it a "transformative mental toughness program" - and the difference matters, because the rules are designed to be inconvenient on purpose.
The five daily tasks
- Follow a diet. Any structured diet you choose - but zero cheat meals and zero alcohol for all 75 days.
- Two 45-minute workouts. Every day. One of them must be outdoors, whatever the weather. They can't be combined into one 90-minute session.
- Drink a gallon of water. That's 3.8 litres. Plain water - coffee and tea don't count toward it.
- Read 10 pages. A physical or e-book of non-fiction / personal development. Audiobooks don't count.
- Take a progress photo. Every day, even when nothing visibly changed.
The rule that defines it
Miss any task, any day - start over at day 1. No partial credit, no "I'll do double tomorrow". This restart rule is what separates 75 Hard from every 30-day challenge: the price of failure grows the deeper in you are, and day 60 you has enormously more to lose than day 3 you.
Common ways people fail (avoidably)
- The outdoor workout at 11pm. Waiting until night to do the outdoor session is the #1 killer. Weather, darkness and exhaustion all vote against you. Do it first.
- The water gallon after dinner. A gallon can't be crammed into an evening comfortably. Two-thirds by mid-afternoon or you'll be up all night.
- A vague diet. "Eating clean" fails on day 12 when someone offers you a biscuit and you have no rule to check. Write the diet down before day 1.
- Forgetting the photo. The easiest task is the most-missed. Alarm, same time, every day.
Should you do it?
Honest answer: most people should do a 30-day challenge first. 75 Hard demands roughly 3 hours a day and punishes a single lapse with a full restart. If you've never held a 30-day streak of anything, build that muscle first - try a 30-day fitness challenge or 30 days without sugar. If you've done those and want the big one, go in with systems, not motivation.
When you're ready: start your 75 Hard calendar - all five tasks live in the day notes, and the 75 unbroken boxes are the whole scoreboard.
